The story takes place in England in 1950, where the war has taken a huge toll on the city, and in the midst of the chaos, a woman named Vera (Imelda Staunton) barely lives a peaceful and stable life with her husband and children. On the surface, Vera is a cleaning lady, but a secret is hidden deep in her heart. In her spare time, Vera would help women who became pregnant during the war to have abortions through the operating theatre provided by her friend Lily (Ruth Sheen), an act that was illegal in Britain at the time.　　The addition of Reggie (Eddie Marsan) adds another joy to Vera's family, and his wedding to Vera's daughter Ethel (Alex Kelly) has cast a smile on everyone's faces.
